Job Description

This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in improving the quality of healthcare for patients by working with Health Services Advisory Group (HSAG) to support the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on various healthcare quality initiatives throughout the country. The ideal candidate is people-oriented, possesses critical-thinking skills to balance the challenges of developing innovative communications strategies while meeting business and contract requirements, and has expertise in grammar and editing. 

The Associate Director, Communications is responsible for leading the design, production, and implementation of a variety of communications activities using various communication channels. Responsibilities also include website management, virtual and in-person meeting facilitation, social marketing strategy development, and writing and editing of materials and reports for dissemination to external audiences. The person in this position will work closely with professional and clinical staff members and executive management to ensure that all materials produced convey integrity and credibility to our receiving audiences. The person in this position may be responsible for the direct supervision of communications project coordinator or administrative staff. 

ESSENTIAL COMPETENCIES, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Assists project directors, as needed, with designing, writing, and editing health promotion and public awareness materials for print and online purposes to include layout and graphic design.
  • Serves on project teams and works independently to assist program staff members in strategic development, design, and implementation of virtual and in-person project activities and interventions using a social marketing and project management approach.
  • Assists with the development and coordination of educational activities.
  • Conducts formative research for developing effective strategies, including communication channels, to influence behavior change and identifies and understands the characteristics, interests, behaviors, and needs of target populations. Uses findings to drive development of new and effective strategies.
  • Designs and produces educational exhibits and audio-visual presentations using various technologies.
  • Conducts internal quality control monitoring regarding efficiency/effectiveness of materials produced and distribution channels used. Presents issues, recommends solutions, and takes corrective actions as indicated.
  • Develops and maintains effective relationships with management staff members; and external providers, physicians, and related organizations to promote interest in activities.
  • Coordinates multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Works on projects and teams across multiple contracts and states.
  • Provides excellent grammar and editing services, with particular attention to detail.
  • Directly supervises communications project coordinator or administrative staff.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, communications, or public health education mandatory. Master’s degree or advanced training in communications, business, healthcare administration, or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience with healthcare communications, editing, or publishing.
  • Healthcare experience preferred.

 

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Adobe systems.
  • Excellent oral and writing skills including grammar, punctuation, spelling, and proofreading/editing, and attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of desktop publishing and website software applications is required.
  • Knowledge of social marketing principles and behavior change models preferred.
  • Working knowledge of the healthcare industry is required.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work on several projects simultaneously and in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to directly supervise staff.
